About

Mission: The Mission of Niizhiwag Anishinaabeg Odenang is to sustain land that can serve as a healing place for Two Spirit and LGBTQ+ Anishinaabe/Indigenous people and their loved ones. It also serves as a model for land back where Indigenous people have access to take care of the land they come from and allow it to breathe.

Before colonization, our ancestors had the freedom to express their gender and sexuality according to our Indigenous customs. For example, in many of our Algonquin languages gender is not such a focus point, and our Two Spirit and Genderqueer people were a normal and celebrated part of the community. Our gifts helped balance perspectives, create healing, and leadership. We seek a healing place where we can resurrect these values and silence the transphobia, racism, and homophobia that has been allowed to fester in our communities. We want a place where we can heal from the boarding school era that taught our people to hide their gender and sexuality in order to survive, and to fear Two Spirit & Indigi-queer people.

Our Two Spirit village will be a safe place where we can partake in our customs, our spirituality, and nourish our existence again!

What will it be; With support from our community and now entering into our fundraising phase, we hope to purchase land that can be a place of spiritual and cultural activities. A place where Two Spirit and Indigiqueer people of all ages can come to sweat, craft, grow food, heal, learn from their elders, practice language, and share our stories. We hope to erect a Two Spirit healing lodge that will service Anishinaabe peoples and our cousins in the Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin region and beyond. We will welcome allies that want to work to support the Two Spirit and Indigi-queer communities get stronger and heal.

We hope you will be a part of our work!
