Niizhiwag Odenang

Two Spirit Village

About

Mission: The Mission of Niizhiwag Anishinaabeg Odenang is to sustain land that can serve as a healing place for Two Spirit and LGBTQ+ Anishinaabe/Indigenous people and their loved ones. It also serves as a model for land back where Indigenous people have access to take care of the land they come from and allow it to breathe.

Vision: Our vision is to create empowering spaces for Two Spirit and LGBTQ+ Anishinaabe/Indigenous to reclaim their identity, bring to life traditional Two Spirit customs, re-create inclusion for our people, heal, and build a sustainable community for many generations to come.

We know this means weaving together all parts of mino bimaadiziwin, including food sovereignty, protecting land and medicines, being in harmony with animal siblings, using art as a tool for expression, calling upon all our Anishinaabe ways to foster mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health for our Two Spirit community.

Values:

  • Predominantly used by and for Two Spirit Anishinaabe, LGBTQ2S+ Indigenous, and their loved ones
  • We strive to stay on the red road, and ask that people don’t bring drugs or alcohol unless it’s medicinal
  • We work to live into the seven grandfather / grandparent teachings
  • We work to stay as close to Anishinaabe ways of understanding, rather than pan indigenous teachings
  • We work to barter as much as we can and trade
  • The community is safe for children and elders
  • We value kindness, compassion and respect in the way we speak to each other
  • We use Anishinaabemowin whenever and as much as we can
